55 the first week and other musings

Hello Folks:

I shot a 55 on the front nine at Thornapple.  The course was wet and played rather long.  I had one par on the day.  The forecast is calling for rain tomorrow.

This week is Masters week.  Tiger is of course the favorite this week.  Reports from Augusta National is the course is wet and playing long.

See ya on the back nine!

Golf League opens today!

Hello Folks:
The 1st week of the golf league is today.  Weather looks good.  I am ready.  At least, as ready as I can be. See ya on the back nine!

Gearing up for April 2nd.

Hello once again fellow golf nuts: 3 major things to write about in this installment — the golf league starts on April 2nd, a new golf teacher for me, and improved physical fitness.  As you know, every year for the past 3 years, the company I work for has an 18 week golf league.  It is that time again.  Wednesday April 2, 2008 is the first week on the 2008 league.  It looks like the first two weeks will be used to establish our handicaps again.  It looks like we are going to have 4 new golfers this year.  As usual, what we don’t know is the format we will be using in the league after we establish our handicaps.  We are still playing at Thornapple and will again be playing nine holes each week.  We will alternate between the front and back nine also. The next thing is I have to find a new teacher.  After working with Todd Nemenez at the local Golf Galaxy Store for the past 18 months, Todd will be moving into the retail management end of things.  Unfortunately, this means he will no longer be giving lessons.  They have brought in a new instructor who teaches at the Easton store and it looks like I will be transitioning to her this saturday.  This saddens me because Todd and I made tremendous strides in my game lopping of about 28 strokes per 18 in the time we worked together.  I was really eager to see what this year brought about in light of the new clubs and  my improved physical condition.  This leads me to the last thing in this installment. As you all know, I have started at the gym and using a personal trainer.  The company I work for is paying for the entire deal as part of a contest.  In addition to losing about 21 lbs, I have reduced my BMI, waist size, and am eating healthier.  While there is not a lot of detail I will go into at this time, what is will say is this.  What is suppossed to be getting smaller is getting smaller and what is supposed to be getting bigger is getting bigger.  I am stronger and more flexible and this will lead to an improvement in scores and distance. See y’all on the back nine!

April 2, 2008 The league begins — Again

Hello Gang:

For those of you who are not golfers, this may come as a suprise but the golf league begins on April 2, 2008 if the weather cooperates.  We will return to Thornaplle Country Club for the 3rd year for what I like to call the “Tour”. Each week we will play 9 holes rotating from the front nine to the back nine on alternate weeks. We don’t know at this time what the format will be as far as competition goes, but Brad will be letting us know shortly.

Another Update for 2008

Hello Again:

This will be short and sweet.  New belt and new pants both a size smaller.  A thinner me — about 15 lbs at this time.  A better swing.  Next lesson in March.

See ya on the back nine!

An update for 2008!

Hello again:

I have lost a total of 11.3 lbs.  My color looks better, my face looks thinner, and folks can tell I am getting results. Another thing I noticed was I can pinch about 1/2 inch gap between my waist and pants to make them fit the way I like.  I think that means I will be needing new pants at a smaller size soon. My belt is at the smallest hole and I can move the belt past that.Another thing I have noticed is I have more endurance. The first time I was on the exercise bike, I struggled to get 16 minutes on level 1. On monday I rode for 40 minutes with 36 of them on level 5 and 4 on level 4. I have more flexibility than ever before. See ya on the back nine!

Prodcut Review — Strike and Swipe

Hello Again.  This prodcut review comes out of my being selected as a product testor by the PGA Tour Partners Club.  Stike and Swipe is a reusable impact tape.  While I tested the one for a putter, the company makes the prodcut for woods and irons also.

The concept here is that the club impacting the ball leaves a mark on the tape corresponding to where the ball struck the face of the club.  Placing your thumb on the side of the tape and “swiping” it across the tape resets the tape like lifting the plastic on those old drawing tablets wiped out what you drew.

I like the product because when you see the result of the shot you just hit, you can look at the product and know how close to the sweet spot you were.  This will immediately show the cause for the result you got.  Using it with the putter and looking at both puts made and missed will give you feedback as to how consistent your putter swing is.  I used it for about a month in the golf league and it is still on my putter.

This product was also showcased on the Golf Channel program “Fore Inventor’s Only” and made it into the top 10.  It was eliminated when the top 5 were selected.  The maker is considering the  retail price of $2.70.  This may be a good price depending upon the quantity in the pack.  The test pack contained 2 and I would not pay more than $1.50 for 2 of them.

Golf League — Final Results

Hello Again!  This is the final installment of the golf league since it is over.  Here are the final results. The first half winners were Kristen and Tom.  The second half winners were Shawn and Neva.  The combined winners were Brad and Ron.  Low round for a B Golfer was Tom with a 50.  Low round for an A Golfer was Jon (a sub) with a 41.  Congratulations for all.Now for some personal stuff in the golf league.  My low league round was a 54 which I shot twice.  On the final hole (18 back 9) on the final day I got a par.  I parred a couple other of the par four holes.   I parred 14 twice.  I parred both of the par threes on the front 9.  I did not par either of the par threes on the back 9.  I did not par any of the par five.  I did not birdie a single hole.I still think Thornapple is too long for most B flight golfers to come anywhere close to par on most holes and most of the male golfers in flight B would probably object to palying from the red tees as those are the “women’s tees” and it would bruise their fragile male egos to do that.  For that reason, I plan to lobby Brad and Alan to go to another course that has Gold Tees so the flight B golfers can tee off behind the “women’s tees” but still play from a closer tee.  I don’t like the possible solution proposed next year for B golfers to use the A golfer’s tee shot.  The main reason for my dislike it is the suggestion will artifically lower scores and mess up my tracking of my game for improvement. Some final thoughts.  I realy improved this year from the beginning of last year.  My golfsuite handicap index is 40.4 and my traditional handicap indes is 39.6.   If I took my league handicap from the beginning of last year and doubled it my hanidcap for last year would have been 64.  That is an improvement of 24 strokes in 2 seasons.  I think that is pretty good.  I took the philosphy to not get new clubs last year but to lear to play the ones I have better.  I say a $500.00 driver will not fix a $10.00 swing. With all that said, this will pretty much be the wind up of this blog for 2007.  There will be other entries but they will not be weekly.  I have a review to write for Strike and Swipe and will be playing one or two new courses next week so I will review those.  I hope those who read this enjoyed it. See ya on the back 9!

Golf League — Week 16 schedule

Hello Again!  I am sorry about the delay in getting this posted.  Brad is back but at this time has not generated any results from the weeks he was not here.  If you have been following this saga, you know this league was scheduled to be 18 weeks with 16 weeks of team and invidual competition and 2 weeks of tournaments or some such thing.  You know that a few weeks ago we had a “free” day due to a lot of subs and no handicaps for them.  At this time, this is the 16th and final week of team competition but it is the 17th week of the 18.  Hopefully, I will be able to have some results for you this week.  For now, here is the schedule:Team 8 vs Team 3Team 2 vs. Team 1

Team 4 vs Team 7

Team 6 vs. Team 5

This week’s round will be played on the front 9 at Thornapple.
